Duck and Cover.

i was going through my itunes today and decided to make a playlist of just cover tracks. i had way more than i was expecting and some i find to be almost better than the originals. Bauhaus does a really great cover of “Ziggy Stardust.” i personally prefer it but maybe that’s because i’m partial to Bauhaus. i think Peter Murphy’s vocals suit the song better . . . Chris Thile of Punch Brothers does an amazing cover of The Strokes “Heart In A Cage.” it is extremely different from the original. thile, a mandolin player, has stripped the song of its heaviness and has heightened the melody of the track by bringing it to the forefront. it’s really beautiful . . . and lastly Rooney takes on “Here Today, Gone Tomorrow” by Ramones. while i don’t prefer this to the original, solely because i love Ramones, it’s still a deserving cover and quite catchy.

This House Can Fit Us All.

Little Pictures – This House Can Fit Us All from eep! productions on Vimeo.

i love looking for music i’ve never heard of on the magical interweb. i frequently checkout Sundtrak because he posts tons of dance tracks and remixes. a lifesaver for parties. i checked in last week and came across a post that was a bit out of character for him. but like he says “too much electro can make you do bad things!” an indie/pop duo from new zealand had sent their new record his way and he liked it so much he decided to stray from his usual posts to shift attention their way. they’re called Little Pictures and they’re all sorts of fun. if their music doesn’t make you smile i don’t want to know you.

*edit: after posting this mark was kind enough to send their entire new album my way. it’s awesome. you all need to get it. order owl + owl.

Totally!

Yes, they’re recording a brand new record just for you! Patent Pending‘s been in the studio working their butts off to bring you a spankin’ new record. But they’re taking a break to actually come see you this summer! Right now you can catch them on the Van’s Warped Tour and then they’ll be joining Catch 22 for The Big Skank Tour.

Full Tour Schedule can be found on P~Unit’s Myspace.

MGMT.

MGMT has become so popular lately, even among some of my friends who I know are WAY out of the loop. It’s weird how music flows through certain circles of people and keeps expanding and reaching groups that would otherwise not consider listening. I guess it’s a good thing. Kind of irritating when you know people are jumping on board to boast the fact that they “know,” because god forbid they actually discover something themselves.

MGMT is playing a show at McCarren Park in Brooklyn next Sunday, the 27th. The Ting Tings and Black Moth Super Rainbow are opening. Show starts at 2pm and is FREE!

Montana’s own – Colin Meloy

Just like an other Average Joe (or whatever the female equivalent is of this phrase is), I appreciate a good gimmick. Now add in the idea that this “gimmick” I’m speaking of is that of performing music in an elevator in cramped circumstances. International wonder La Blogotheque introduced me to this gimmick last year with an incredible Arcade Fire performance in a freight elevator. (Who knew ripping a magazine could provide impeccable percussion sounds?!)

On the heels of this performance, I came across another beauty – Montana’s own: Colin Meloy, of the Decemberists performing a little diddy in a smaller lift. I stumbled upon this article on this great website that chose the best bands/artists from their home state – documenting acts from each of the 50 states. I don’t necessarily agree with all of their choices – do you? Any thoughts of bands or artists that are missing? (While I love Dr. Dre – I’m a strong believer that Mr. Jeff Buckley should have been in the running for California. In their defense, Cali is a tough one.)

Representing Montana, for solo artist, is Colin Meloy. Try to watch this video and NOT smile. I love that he checks each floor as the door opens. The ending is cute as he almost loses a limb in the name of good music.

This is love in an elevator, if you ask me.
